Milpa Mexican Cafe, Las Vegas: Review

Milpa Mexican cafe is a pleasant and nice Mexican “cafe”, although don’t think coffee shop vibes here.

I had a cauliflower taco and two mushroom-based tacos. These were nice, served on what appeared to be home-made tortillas, which I always appreciate. The only downside was that they seemed somewhat bland or under-spiced. I didn’t see an obvious spice tray or cart, unlike some Mexican restaurants, and the cashier was busy ringing people up, so I just had them as-is rather than asking.

The standout here was the guacamole, which was richly spiced and tasted great — fresh, generous, and well-seasoned. It more than made up for the decent but under-spiced vegetarian tacos.

My friend had a Paloma, which I tried a tiny amount of. It was high quality, with the freshness of the juice and syrup mixing well with the alcohol, which I think was mezcal. I had a watermelon mint agua fresca, or something like that–I honestly can’t remember the name–which was genuinely refreshing and not overly sweet.

Overall this is a quality taco place, with great drinks (alcoholic and sober) and a welcoming, if casual, atmosphere.

Worth a stop if you’re after quality Mexican food, though I haven’t spent enough time in Vegas to rank it against other options.

Take Risks Be Happy Score: 8.5/10 — with nice vegetarian options. Honestly this would be a 9+ if I were able to spice the tacos a bit more, and since they were so busy, maybe I just missed out on an obvious fix. Recommended!
